How Flickr Did it Right

There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of sites that will let you upload your photos and cerate online photos albums. But in my opinion, Flickr has done it right.

Several factors went into my decision to go with Flickr over say PicasaWeb or any of the others, and that was price and the API. The price for a Pro account is so cheap, something just above $2 a month, for unlimited uploads, is insane. No one comes close. The cheapest of PicasaWeb Pro accounts costs $20 a year for only 6GB of space. Some might ask, why would you need more than 6GB or even 10GB. My answer is because Flickr gives me UNLIMITED for $25 a year, and that's just better.

I've started uploading all my photos to Flickr, and creating Sets to distinguish photos for an event. Flickr also has Tagging down. You can have pretty much an unlimited number of tags for a photos or sets or groups. This makes it easy to search for one of your photos or any number of public photos.

The interface on Flickr is easy and clean. It's not cluttered by crazy ads, and that's surprising seeing how it's a Yahoo! property and I don't think Yahoo! knows how to keep in your face ads at bay. It's the reason I hate their web based email client, too many in your face ads. But the navigation on Flickr is clean and easy, and you can modify it to look anyway your want. I hope Yahoo! keeps their hands off Flickr.

If you don't use Flickr I would encourage you to look at it. They have a free account and a Pro account. I have the Pro account and its been worth every penny. Flickr is stable, has an API and several options for managing photos from your desktop. The only thing I wish Flickr had was a better mobile management tool.

Thanks Chris.

iPhoto ‘08 is a mess

I hope it's me and I need to learn a little more, but if I understand the rumblings around the net I'm not alone.

First, the program runs a hell of a lot faster than '06 did.

Second the interface is pretty nice.

Third I like the thought of tagging pictures to an event, which is a new feature.

But that is where it all falls apart. I have the preferences set NOT to import my pictures, but if you look in the iPhoto library package, there are hundreds of cached files, which in my opinion defeats the purpose of NOT importing.

There doesn't seem to be a way to NOT import your pictures into an event. Not every picture is part of an event. I have a lot more random pictures than I have groups. I want to just import my pictures into the Library and let me decide whats an event or an album or a group.

It's all messed up. I like the program but it needs a lot of work. I'll stick with Flickr Pro for the time being.

Show us your work space

I'm curious what everyone's work space looks like. A few years ago I thought I would take one picture every work day of my work space. Sort of like a 365 project. It didn't last too long. Here is one
picture of my old space. Here is a picture of my new space.

Leave comments on this post with a link to a picture of your workspace and I'll do a write up on the most unique space posted.

Is Apple afraid the iPhone is an iPod killer?

I'm sure it's no secret the reason Apple decided to only provide an iPhone with 4 or 8 gigabytes of storage space is so they wouldn't kill their wildly popular iPod line.

Ok, that is probably not true. However, I have the same problem that a lot of new iPhone users will have. My phone, a T-Mobile MDA, which is capable of playing music and video, has such a small amount of storage space that I have an iPod just for music and video. How crazy is that? With the low cost of memory and the nano sized technology available today, you would think offering 30 gigabytes of storage in the iPhone would make sense. After I've saved some music, videos, pictures, I have nothing left and with the absence of removable storage I'm sunk.

It's a very well thought out plan. No matter how cool the iPhone is, and I'm sure it's cool, just ask Robert Scoble who was Twittering about it at 2AM, you're still going to need two devices to have all you want. I think Apple really dropped the ball. Instead of adding a new device that would rule all it added a device that needs help.

Photobucket has some cool technology

Matthew Reinbold gave me a pretty interesting demo of Photobucket at the Utah Tech Spotlight today. The site uses technology from Adobe, and aside from the normal sharing of photos, you can also upload video, and create mixes of photos, videos and music providing a basic movie making tool. It's pretty neat. I created a video with some stills and a video and stitched them together into one file. I also uploaded a small video and edited out a portion that was crappy. It all worked pretty good.

After spending a few hours messing around with it, the interface is pretty good (although filled with ads), the tools are fairly fast, not as fast I had hoped but it was ok. I was generally pleased with the way it worked and I was able to create my videos and was provided a link to embed in my blog.

What I don't like is the layout. The links to the various areas (i.e. photos, videos) are not where I would have expected them to be. They are at the bottom of the screen. I'm sure these are things that will be worked out in the future and doesn't make it any less of a product.

I have a Pro account with Flickr, and Photobucket offers a Pro account as well, but both cost the same. There are limitations on space with Photobucket but not with Flickr. I assume the limitation is because you can create videos that probably don't compressed like pictures. I could be wrong.

Anyway, check it out, its free, and there seems to be some interesting technology there. Thanks Matt.

In remembering our heroes, we honor the great sacrifices made for the dreams of every American. May we never forget their strength, courage, and profound willingness to stand up and defend our way of life. A solemn reminder of sacrifices made

I saw this picture today. I'm not trying to make a political statement, I just thought this was an exceptional photo that has a lot of emotion.
