No Development For Old Men

I started listening to a new podcast today, well new for me, called This Developers Life. And aparently I started listening at a great time. The podcast is hosted by Rob Conery and Scott Hanselman. The podcast is a discussion on things technical and not so technical. Great idea, been wanting to do something like this for a while.

Last weeks show Scott made a comment how developers who can't keep up with fast changing technologies, give up and go into management. At first I thought what big balls this guy has to make a statement like that. He was basically saying that if you can't keep up you're a loser, and the only thing left for you is management.

The rest of the day was spent reflecting on my career, the choices I've made, and the direction I am heading. I also wondered if I had made that choice; give up trying and default to management.

The movie title No Country for Old Men popped into my head at one point. I some times feel like that. What to do with old developers. I remembered back to my days during Y2K, and the number of Cobol programmers brought out of moth balls to help remediate code written 30 years ago. For a short while they felt useful again. It must have been exciting to be back in the game.

I digress. Back to Scotts comments, Rob's thoughts, and a follow up interview with a listener named Mark Freedman. I've read Marks blog off and on, and his story is about a technology Manager trying to get back into development, and the struggles he is facing. It's a great read, and I appreciate his openness.

Honestly, I've tried to spend more time in management, and less time coding. It wasn't that I couldn't, or wouldn't, keep up with the fast pace of changing development technologies. My choice, I thought, was for the need to share my experience, mentor other developers, and work on the big picture of projects. I have also used the "I can't keep up" excuse several times, as a way to express my displeasure of development. I think I was really just copping out.

So how do Old Developers get a Country? Well, just because I'm older, and not as fast, doesn't mean I need to shelve my development efforts. Scott and Mark both talk about going solo, forging ahead on your own, and filling multiple roles; developer, manager, entrepreneure. I've freelanced for some time, and I know the grass isn't greener on that side either. That path has it's own unique issues. But the trade off was I get to code, get to manage, and get to innovate. The best of all worlds. I think that could be a great Country for Old Developers, like me.

I'm amazed how much one podcast has affected me. Great job Rob and Scott (and Mark too). I love it when someone makes me think about my own situation, and causes true change. Working on my career plan, which I haven't updated or added to in a long time.

Podcasting Is A Cinch

A few months ago I started using a great service called Cinch, from BlogTalkRadio. It's really a small footprint mobile podcasting system. But I've found many different uses for Cinch. You can visit my Cinch page here.

You can create audio casts three ways; an iPhone app, your computer, or dial in number. You have to pre-configure your phone number so Cinch recognizes who is recording, and posts right to your account.

I've used Cinch a couple of different ways. One is to record quick notes for myself (sent to a non public folder), as a backup for audio podcasts I'm recording via Skype, and as a quick way to capture podcasts on the go.

Jesse Stay has been using it to record a daily journal. I'm sure there are dozens of unique ways to use Cinch. I would love to know how you are using Cinch.

*Disclaimer: I was not compensated in any way for writing this post. U simply think Cinch is a great tool and wanted to share.

CouchCast Review Of Accelerando

Today we reviewed the Sci-Fi book Accelerando.
If you’ve been reading current science fiction, and particularly if you’ve been reading the discussion around current science fiction, you’ve probably heard of the concept of the Singularity. If you haven’t, briefly, it’s the idea that technological development is an exponential curve, which means that technological change will keep getting faster and faster until it vertically spikes. This is the Singularity, since beyond this point whatever exists afterwards will probably be incomprehensible to those of us who live on this side of the spike.

Props To My Peeps

I've slacked over the past few weeks on my weekly props and thought it was a good time get back at it.

This weeks prop goes out to Brad Baldwin. I recently connected with Brad at a really great pizza place in Draper Utah. Brad is a driving force behind Rocky Mountain Voices. I've known who Brad is for some time but was never able to meet. He reached out through LinkedIn which is pretty cool.

One thing I've learned about Brad is he really wants to build a strong community of new media providers and consumers. There are a number of podcasters and videocasters in the Intermountain West and Rocky Mountain Voices is set as the place to find all of these gems. If you're a podcaster or videocaster, or your business needs help getting started, Brad and his production company may be the answer.

Just Jump Into Podcasting With These 5 Steps

I want to start off by saying this; you can Podcast, right now, with pretty much everything you have at your fingertips. This isn't a white paper on what a Podcast is, because if you didn't know what a Podcast was you probably wouldn't be reading this.

Why should you listen to me? Because I produce a Podcast and I know that you can do it with practically nothing.

1. You'll need a computer with some type of microphone, or a laptop with a built in mic. This is probably the only place where I would suggest using one of those gamer headsets with built in mic's, they rock, have good sound and are cheap. You may already have one so you can move down the list. If you don't, consider investing in one. Even if you decide a month from now that Podcasting isn't for you, you still have a cool headset. Personally, I use the Logitech USB 350. It has great sound quality.

2. You need a topic. Once you have a topic you can begin creating your Podcast. There are probably thousands of people out there who similar interests as you and can share them through your Podcast.

3. Decide how long your Podcast will be. The amount of time to spend Podcasting may be different for your topic. But personally, anything that runs over 45 minutes loses appeal and most of the time I never make it to the end. Now that's just me and I'm probably in the minority. For starters make it short. Maybe 10 or 15 minutes then build from there. You'll discover a lot of great ideas along the way and that will add to your shows length and quality.

4. You need host your Podcast somewhere so people can download it. There are so many directories out there I would try them all. It can't hurt to expose your Podcasts in multiple places. There are free services and there are pay services. Since you're just starting out and aren't sure if you will do this long term, try one of the free services I'll recommend at the end of my post.

5. Blog about your Podcast. Tell people about it. Create business cards with your Podcasts web address on it and hand them out. Comment on other people's Podcast posts and leave your Podcasts web address. It's that easy.

Sure, this sounds real simple and the simple fact of the matter is it can be. Podcasts, just like any other endeavor require work, research, dedication and consistency. It doesn't need to cost much if anything to create a Podcast. It does require that you work on improving it if you want to increase your listeners.

We're not going for the highest HD quality sound you can produce. We're talking quick to market. This will get you there.

Tools: Audacity is pretty much all you will need for either the PC or the Mac. If you have a Mac and have iLife '06 or '08, use GarageBand.

Hardware: Headset with mic. Stand alone mic. Built in laptop mic. Again the Logitech USB 350 is a great mic.

Services: Podcasting.net, Podcast Pickle, TalkShoe and Pod-O-Matic.

If you're in Salt Lake City on October 18th, I encourage you to attend the Utah New Media Conference to learn more about Podcasting and Videocasting.

What are your ideas to make Podcasting easier?

July Utah Blogger Dinner

Here are photos of people in attendance. We had almost 20, 17 I think was the number, right Jason?

We met at Goodwood in Draper. I like Goodwood, sort of like Famous Dave's only fancier. The food was ok, but the amount of room we had was much better than at Applebees.

There was a lot of discussion on Social Networks. Jesse Stay walked us through the basics of creating a Facebook Application. That was very interesting.

All in all it was good times at Goodwood. See everyone next month.
